This is the downloadable 3D model for Drawing Stencil Kit #3 (DSK3) and not a physical product. If you'd like to buy the kit already printed, you can! MJS.ART Drawing Stencil Kit #3

I've been traveling and during my trips I've needed a drawing template for basic shapes that fits in my #EDC (Every Day Carry) pencil kit. But I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

As part of my artistic process (drawing, woodworking, etc.) I design, create, and 3D-print custom objects, so I designed and 3D printed my own EDC-compatible drawing stencils.

I started showing the stencils on my Instagram profile and people asked me if they could buy them from me. And now you can. : ) MJS.ART Drawing Stencil Kit #3

Drawing Stencil Kit #3 (DSK3) includes three shapes: rectangles, ellipses (ovals), and triangles. There are 15 rectangles and ellipses and 19 triangles. All stencils start with a 1/16" height shape and increase 1/32" each shape down. All shapes are 1" in width.

I designed my stencils with an asymmetrical top and bottom:

  • When using The smooth “top” side of the stencil face down, it lays flat against the paper. This is the most common way drawing stencils are designed and used. Note that my logo is mirrored when used this way
  • With the rough “bottom” side of the stencil face down, there is an undersized 1/32" tier to lift the edge of the shape off of the paper while drawing. I designed this with my favorite technical pens in mind. This is the way.

My innovative tiered design prevents the pen tip from contacting the edge of the stencil and the paper simultaneously which can result in a capillary action that causes ink blotches.

Another innovation comes from 3D printing the stencils with the top side purposefully facing down. This results in the bottom side having a bit of texture that provides some grip (when compared to the smooth top side) on the paper. It helps to keep the stencil "planted" while you work.
